The 6-week Better Anxiety Programme

CHANGE YOUR FAMILY'S RELATIONSHIP TO ANXIETY


This programme is unique and you won't find anything quite like it anywhere. The Better Anxiety Programme provides families and caretakers with evidence-based, practical strategies for supporting children and teens ages 7-17 years struggling with anxiety.  


The programme begins as a parent-based program for the first 3-weeks, focussing solely on supporting you with your anxious child or teen.  The second part of the programme involves working directly with your child or teen to transform their thoughts and behaviours and empower them to better manage their emotions and cope more effectively.

Parents are often overwhelmed by the demands of worry and don't know what to do (or not do). It puts a palpable strain on frustrated, helpless parents.  This programme will change that, once and for all. You'll be equipped with the confidence to better address your child's anxiety head on.  You'll also have the know how to support courageous coping behaviour (without caving). 

 

Sometimes, despite our best intentions our behaviours unknowingly reinforce our child's worry and avoidance.  Encouraging reassurances. Well-meaning accommodations.  Accidental rewards.  Modelling. As parents, we strongly influence and shape our child's beliefs, behaviours, and overall development.  Focusing on parenting styles, family dynamics and the home environment is paramount to improving things. 


Additionally, when a child or teen undergoes therapy, the parent is often left in the dark.  What is shared between the therapist and child is confidential and the parent doesn't really know what is transpiring and how best to support their loved one.  They're left in a bit of a no man's land (which is in itself anxiety provoking).  Unfortunately, this actually sets the child up for failure, as patterns of behaviour at home may undermine treatment.


 The Better Anxiety Programme works with you the parent to put the foundations in place for long-term success and positive change.  It is based on a program from Yale University called Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) and is scientifically proven to be effective in treating anxiety.

Parent Only Sessions

The Better Anxiety Program addresses key learning outcomes to overcome the grips of anxiety. It's all about how best to support YOU and YOUR CHILD. This is NOT a cookie cutter or one-size-fits-all approach. Each session integrates Psychoeducation, 1-on-1 Strategic, Solution-based Psychotherapy (CBT, ERP) and a Custom, Personalised 20-minute Clinical Hypnosis session, in addition to home practice, worksheets and a bespoke weekly audio recording.

Intro Week 1

90-minutes

  •  Unravelling the mystery of your child’s anxiety
  • How anxiety works and how it doesn’t go away on its own
  • Understanding anxiety’s need for Comfort and Certainty
  • Why Worry is predictable
  • Challenging our basic instincts about how to help fearful kids
  • What parents do that can make anxiety worse and what they can do to make it better
  • Clarifying what’s within your Control to change (and what’s not)
  • How to break the cycle of Avoidance
  • Formulating a Plan and positive Roadmap forward

Week 2

60-minutes

  • Identifying your child’s core triggers (and your own)
  • How to respond more supportively to your anxious child with Empathy, Confidence and a Positive Expectancy
  • Sharing steps and strategies to help kids/teens self-manage anxiety
  • Handling ‘what if?’ worries and catastrophic thinking like a pro
  • Personifying anxiety
  • Stepping into Uncertainty
  • The need to be flexible 
  • 7 techniques to adapt to Change
  • Challenging your own thinking and looking at things differently

Week 3

60-minutes

  • Learning how to help your child navigate life's changes without too many bumps and bruises
  • Keeping firm Boundaries
  • Fighting Fear by facing Fear (step ladders)
  • How to keep Calm at times of stress
  • Being in the moment and not living in the past or future
  • Self-care tips for parents when they feel Worry and Exhaustion
  • Handling talking back and oppositional behaviour
  • Getting partners on the same page
  • Creating the best environment for your child’s development


Child / Teen Sessions

The Better Anxiety Program addresses key learning outcomes to help your kids (ages 7-17 years) be happier, more confident and capable individuals. The focus is on 'how' your child is 'doing anxiety.' Each session integrates Psychoeducation, 1-on-1 Strategic, Solution-based Psychotherapy (CBT, ERP) and a Custom, Personalised 20-min Paediatric, Clinical Hypnosis session, in addition to home practice, worksheets and a bespoke weekly audio recording.

Week 4

60-minutes

  • Understanding Anxiety
  • The flight, fight or freeze response
  • The mind-body connection
  • When Anxiety shows up
  • Anxiety hates Discomfort and Uncertainty
  • How to talk to Worry
  • Anxiety’s mantra “…. And you can’t deal with it!”
  • The issue of Avoidance
  • Your mind as a muscle 

Week 5

60-minutes

  • Catching bad thoughts
  • Reframing negative thinking
  • Being the Boss of your Brain
  • Why you shouldn’t believe everything you think
  • Challenging your Imagination and validating your thinking
  • Learning to identify feelings of Worry, Fear, Inadequacy, Anger, and Sadness and knowing how to handle them
  • Learning to better manage thoughts and emotions
  • Externalising Anxiety 

Week 6

60-minutes

  • Just Do It – Action is key
  • Giving it a go – stepping into the unknown
  • Bridging to success
  • Celebrating bounce back moments
  • Focussing on the positive – “Sunny with 5% chance of rain”
  • Being comfortable with being uncomfortable
  • How to COPE in the face of any challenge – you CAN handle it!
  • Calming Techniques
  • Creating self-mastery and self-control
